It’s hard to disagree with YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki when she calls her platform “the new TV.” Many need help watching news and traditional media on YouTube.

Susan Wojcicki: Thanks for inviting me. I want to come over here and talk. Yes, but their garage was small. They actually came through the garage. They had to work in a small part of our house. The whole house was small.

Frederick Kempe: Tell me this story. Since you’ve been there, tell us.

Susan Wojcicki: (Laughter)

Frederick Kempe: I mean, do you know what they were and what were the results?

Susan Wojcicki: No. No I can’t say they thought I could rent a garage because they had this great idea and I wanted a lot of stuff. I wanted rent. (Laughter) I wanted to see if I could pay off the mortgage on the house I just rented out. I already knew Sergei. So they left. There was an employee. They brought home up to 7 employees and were very busy at the time.

But when they got there, I understood. They are there all night and I talk about what they do and how important it is. It wasn’t a very exciting part of the tech market at the time and it didn’t seem like it was going anywhere, but I realized that I could and could really make a difference. Growing up in an academic family, I really knew the importance of access to information and saw how great the work they were doing was what ultimately convinced me to join them.

Susan Wojcicki: So we were working on products and there were products like Google video products, YouTube. As a result, I took a closer look at how people use it and what they upload, and I’d say there are two key insights from my work.

The first is that people want to share their stories. So we didn’t know that [people] would post videos of themselves and what we saw were people. I’ve seen millions of videos uploaded now and people want to share [via] their stories. Of course, many people want to be famous or talk about something important. However, there was a question about whether everyone wants to hear from an ordinary person about a job or hobby that is meaningful to them, and this is what we saw.

There was one video that really stood out to me, and it was of two students in a dorm room. Their roommates are running errands in the back and they sing this Backstreet Boys song. That’s really cool. That was my first really big hit, and wow, I realized that you can enjoy user-generated content here. People want to see, people want to see [content] from other people like them, and I’ve realized how powerful it is as a medium of entertainment and information.

Frederick Kempe: Very interesting. It’s great to have someone who was there when it all started. This leads to the next question. I mean, I think we all see the potential of the internet. We’ve all seen the potential of things like Google, YouTube, and Twitter.
